For most people, the eyes are the focal point when meeting a new person. And because the area around the eyes and the eyelids contain some of the thinnest skin on the entire human body, your eyes can often age more quickly than the rest of your face. What is eyelid surgery?
Clinically known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is done to correct sagging and drooping eyelids. Although this surgery is usually cosmetic, it can also be necessary to address eyelids that are actually beginning to impact vision. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and tightens underlying muscles. Dr. Amirlak is careful with fat in the eyelid area, as removing too much fat can leave the person with a gaunt look. He usually repositions fat, rather than removing it.
Who would benefit from eyelid surgery?
Most anyone over the age of 40 could probably benefit from eyelid surgery, but certain factors can accelerate the sagging. While our tissues weaken and sag with age, excessive sun exposure, obesity, and smoking can create extra sagging in the eyelids.
How does Dr. Amirlak perform blepharoplasty?
A patient can have eyelid surgery performed on one or both eyelids. Because of this, the procedure can take from 45 minutes to two hours.
In the upper eyelid, Dr. Amirlak makes an incision along the natural crease in the eyelid. Once the incision is made, fat deposits are repositioned or removed, muscles and tissue are tightened, and excess skin is excised.
In the lower eyelid, the incision is usually made just below the lower lash line. It can also be made on the inside of the eyelid.
What is recovery like?
Recovery from eyelid surgery is not difficult, despite the delicate area involved. There is not a great deal of pain, and the use of cold compresses can be very effective in minimizing swelling and speeding healing. Stitches usually are removed within 3-4 days. Most swelling resolves relatively quickly. Patients can return to work within a few days to a week.
Results
Blepharoplasty is a very satisfying surgery. The results are permanent, although your eyes will continue to age. The consensus is that eyelid surgery can take 10 years off a person’s facial age. Plus, it is a surgery that no one knows you had. People will look at you at sense you look younger and less tired, but they won’t have any idea why.
