Surgical Training

He started his surgical training by completing a five year residency in general surgery at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. His residency included a year as a Chief Surgical Resident. During his surgical training, he was part of a team to organize humanitarian surgical mission trips to Latin American Countries. He was fortunate to participate in the surgical care of patients in several underserved countries.

He then moved to Louisville to complete a one-year fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery (including peripheral nerve surgery) at the world-renowned Kleinert’s Institute. During that year, he was honored to be part of the surgical team performing the only hand transplants in the country at the time. He then completed a 3-year plastic and reconstructive surgery training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio. His mentors have included some of the world leaders of Plastic Surgery, including plastic surgeon Warren Breidenbach and plastic surgeon Arun Gosain. Dr. Amirlak was also trained by Dr. Bahman Guyuron, the pioneer of Migraine Surgery and a world-renowned plastic surgeon in the area of Rhinoplasty and Facial Cosmetic Surgery.

In 2010, Dr. Amirlak was invited to Dallas as an Assistant Professor at the renowned UT South-western (UTSW) Department of Plastic Surgery. This is the largest academic plastic surgery department in the United States and is the most respected worldwide.

Dr. Amirlak’s Research

As an expert plastic surgeon, Dr. Amirlak’s research has been presented at several societies of surgical subspecialties throughout the world, and has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Clinics in Plastic Surgery and many others. He has published chapters in leading surgical books, and received multiple awards for research and academic achievements, such as Ohio Valley Society of Plastic Surgery Award, Rhinoplasty Society Award, American Medical Association Physicians Recognition Award, and the 2007 Frachaud Award. He has been recognized in national media such as NPR, Daily Mail and ABC News.

Dr. Amirlak is regularly invited to give national and international lectures to plastic surgeons and physicians of other specialties. He is the director of the cosmetic surgery lab for the Annual Dallas Cosmetic Symposium and lectures as an expert plastic surgeon at the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium, where thousands of national and international plastic surgeons attend to learn about advanced rhinoplasty and facial cosmetic surgery. He is also leading the research and clinical studies on 3D imaging and printing for use on breast augmentation, breast reconstruction and 3D rhinoplasty at UTSW. This includes the use of non-implant base BRAVA BRA/Fat injection for breast augmentation which he has introduced to the Dallas area.

Dr Amirlak was appointed the Director of Residency Cosmetic Clinic in 2012 and the Medical Director of the plastic surgery clinics in 2015 at UTSW. He was also promoted to associated professor of plastic surgery in 2015.
