Give Your Chin the Spartacus Treatment

When you think of a dynamic male chin, there’s one guy that comes to mind — Kirk Douglas. He died in February of this year at the age of 103! But in his movie star days his chiseled face, particularly his chin and its cleft, was legendary. If you’ve caught a recent showing of Spartacus on Netflix while we’ve all been stuck indoors or have seen one of his famous westerns on AMC or something, you may now look at your face in the mirror and feel inferior. But, in reality, who else has a chin like Kirk Douglas?

You can…if you come to Dr. Amirlak for chin augmentation.

Who needs a new chin?

Some of us have hated our chins for as long as we can remember. It’s weak, lacking definition, and without much projection. Some people even see their chin as receding. When patients come to Dr. Amirlak for chin surgery they usually want to augment or change the shape, but a chin that is overly large or protrudes too much can be reduced.

What’s the procedure like?

Dr. Amirlak has two choices for where to make the incision to insert the implant(s). He can make the incision under the chin (submental) or inside the mouth (intraoral). Implants come in different shapes and are usually made of silicone or polyethylene. To prepare for the implant, Dr. Amirlak makes a pocket in the connective tissue inside the chin, being careful to avoid the major nerve in the area. The procedure is pretty straightforward, taking just 30 to 45 minutes.

Dr. Amirlak can also perform what is known as genioplasty, a repositioning of the chin bones to achieve the desired projection or to reduce size.

Augmentation can also be achieved with dermal fillers, particularly Juvéderm and Restylane. Unlike implants, fillers provide only temporary results as the body absorbs the filler material over time. Still, fillers can be a great way for a patient to “demo” a new chin before opting to have the permanent solution of implants.

Recovery

Obviously, your results are immediate. Patients typically feel slight numbness in the chin and the lips, as well as swelling and bruising in the area after the procedure. This generally passes in a few days. Most patients can return to work and day-to-day activities in a week or so.
