Do Your Lips Need a Lift?

Everyone would like to have full lips like Angelina Jolie, but for the vast majority of us we either never had plump, shapely lips or else they’ve thinned with sagging and declining collagen production.

Celebrities started the trend of using dermal fillers to add volume to their lips. It started with Juvéderm Ultra, but the results could be pretty darn obvious, too showy for many women. So, Juvéderm added Volbella to their line to provide more subtle increases in volume and definition. Restylane created Silk for the same goals.

Dr. Amirlak adds volume and definition to the lips of our patients from Dallas and surrounding areas with these dermal filler injections, but in 6 months or so they need to return for another injection session.

Dr. Amirlak wants our patients to know there is a permanent solution, the lip lift. While not one of the more well-known cosmetic procedures, lip lifts provide most of the same benefits as hyaluronic acid-based fillers, without the need to come back twice every year.

What is a lip lift?

Sometimes known as an upper lip lift, a lip lift is a permanent surgical procedure to increase the amount of pink lip you see. This makes the lips look youthful and full. Basically, the procedure removes tissue under the nose to shorten the space between the nose and the top of the lip. This area is known as the philtrum, the vertical groove in the midline portion of the upper lip bordered by two lateral ridges or pillars.

This procedure with Dr. Amirlak takes less than an hour and is perfect for women who want to add height to their lips rather than the volume provided with dermal fillers.

How is a lip lift done?

There are different methods that Dr. Amirlak uses for his lip lifts, but there is some commonality. Basically, he removes a cup of tissue from beneath the nose. This incision is typically in the shape of a bullhorn, giving it the title of subnasal bullhorn. Then he pulls the center, right, and left of the lip up toward the nose and closes the incision.

Why would I need a lip lift?

Lip lifts with Dr. Amirlak correct for changes that have occurred in your philtrum. In this skin between the nose and the upper lip, ligaments supporting this area loosen and weaken with normal aging. The perky, youthful-looking aperture of the mouth becomes thinner. The philtrum is ideally 11 to 13 millimeters in what would be deemed a “classically proportioned” female face. The problem is this distance elongates by one to three millimeters every decade after your twenties. A lip lift returns the proportions to a more desirable number. By reducing the philtrum, this makes the lips look larger and more pronounced.
